Sustainable Palm Oil - How Traceable is Your Supply Chain?

Where does your business get its palm oil?

If so, how sustainable is it, and how do you know?

Food manufacturers and food service businesses across the UK are starting to embrace sustainable palm oil – but what does this actually mean?

In this post, we explore the world of ‘certified sustainable’ palm oil – examining the different supply chain models involved, and what the different certifications really mean in terms of sustainability.

Certified Sustainable Palm Oil Explained

Certified sustainable is a broader term than you might imagine.

The words ‘certified sustainable palm oil’ can be applied to any palm oil produced to the standards set out by one or more different organisations and certification schemes, including:

  • Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO)

  • International Sustainability and Carbon Certification (ISCC)

  • Indonesian Sustainable Palm Oil Standard (ISPO)

  • Malaysian Sustainable Palm Oil Standard (MSPO)

These have different criteria that producers must follow if they are going to call themselves ‘certified sustainable’ under each scheme.

In the UK, the most recognised certification is RSPO – and when people refer to certified sustainable palm oil in the UK, they usually mean RSPO certified.

The Sustainability Scale - Supply Chain Options

Certified sustainable palm oil can also come from a number of different supply chain models:

  • Mass Balance - where sustainable palm oil is mixed with non-certified palm oil (with only the quantity of sustainable oil sold as certified sustainable).

  • Segregated - sustainable palm oil taken from a number of different certified sources.

  • Identity Preserved - sustainable palm oil, fully traceable back to a single certified source.

Of these supply chain models, Identity Preserved (IP) is regarded as the highest standard – because it offers complete traceability, right back to the growers.

This traceability enables buyers to effectively vet their suppliers to ensure that the production methods, business ethics and sustainability credentials match their own. This simply isn’t possible with other supply chain models.
